Many health insurance plans require people to pay what is actually a deductible. A deductible is an amount of cash that you are required to pay before the health insurance carrier will make any payments for you. Health insurance deductibles differ greatly by plan. Some plans require you to thousands in advance before you have coverage. Other plans allow people to spend a single small sum and then full coverage sets in. The kind of medical health insurance plan you choose should tell you well in advance what you will probably pay each time. Some health insurance plans possess a deductible that applies every year. Gingrich: Washington same-sex law the 'right way'

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich declined Friday to outright reject a new law legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state, saying if it is approved by voters it will at least be enacted "the right way."

The former House speaker's comments came on a visit to the state Capitol where he also met privately with Republican legislators. Washington's Democratic governor signed the gay marriage bill last week and it will take effect in June unless opponents can gather enough signatures to force a fall referendum.

Gingrich cited the possibility of a public vote in appraising the hot-button issue, noting that judges have authorized same-sex marriage in other places.

"I think at least they're doing it the right way, which is going through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will," Gingrich said.

A November referendum is not guaranteed. Opponents of the Washington law need more than 120,000 valid voter signatures needed by June 6 to put the law on hold pending a referendum.

Gingrich made clear he opposes gay marriage personally and would vote no on such a referendum if one ever came up in his home state.

His posture was different than rival Rick Santorum, who campaigned in Washington the same day the law was signed.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, questioned the effectiveness of having states decide the definition of marriage. He supports a federal constitutional amendment making marriage exclusively between a man and a woman.

"I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society," Santorum said after a meeting with church leaders organizing a ballot drive to block the Washington law from taking hold.

Washington state has had domestic partnership laws since 2007, and in 2009 passed an "everything but marriage" expansion of that law, which was ultimately upheld by voters after a referendum challenge.

Minnesota and North Carolina have measures on upcoming ballots to write gay marriage bans into their state constitutions. And same-sex marriage opponents in Maryland have taken the first steps to bring legislation legalizing gay marriage passed by the state's Legislature this week to a voter referendum on the November ballot.

Gingrich has spent two days campaigning in Washington ahead of the state's March 3 caucuses. He heads Saturday to San Francisco for a speech to the California GOP convention, where he said he'll dissect President Barack Obama's latest energy address "paragraph by paragraph."

Improving Profits With Real Estate Opportunities | SemOifc

As Mark Twain said, ?Buy land. They?re not making it anymore.? Land offers a safe investment opportunity due to its limited nature. This applies to real estate in general.
Investing shrewdly in real estate is one of the smartest ways of generating income. Although there are the occasional scenarios where slumps occur, the real estate market still remains one of the most reliable investment markets in the world. You need only compare the value of a property 50 years ago to what it is now to realize that choosing real estate as a vehicle for your long-term investment is a safe way of enjoying high returns with marginal risk. Still, the best way of making the right decisions in real estate is taking the time to learn more about the way real estate investing operates.
Home Builders in Iowa
Investing in real estate offers a steady growth because its value increases proportionate to inflation. This is due to the fact that rent, which is the main source of income from real estate, is tied to the inflation rate. This is especially beneficial to the property holder when the high cost of homes force many to opt for rented homes. The demand for rentals increases, securing a steady tenancy and putting rental rates in the landlord?s hands. When you consider that mortgage payments remain steady and income from the rented property continues to rise with inflation, it gives a win-win scenario to real estate investors. If the rental rates climb and interest rates, home prices, and mortgage costs drop, people with enough savings to cover the initial purchase cost of a home may opt out of renting and purchase.
Your real estate investment does not have to be personally funded by your resources. Most ventures in the real estate market can be entered with very little initial outlay. Banks can loan you the money to purchase real estate. If you opt for longer term mortgages, you will be able to make monthly payments you can afford or that the rent covers.
The majority of financial institutions are willing to lend money to people who want to invest in real estate because the property represents attractive collateral. If you do not carry out your end of the contract, the bank can seize the property. At least half of the property?s worth can be funded by a bank or other lending agency.
One of the biggest myth related to real estate is that you should never invest in property when the market is at a low point. The exact opposite is the case. It is always wise to purchase real estate in times of economic recession. Be on the lookout for good deals during a market slump. Purchase properties when the prices are low. When real estate is hot and prices have skyrocketed, stay out. It is best to keep in mind the old saying that there is a time for every purpose when you are considering an investment.
In buying properties, you will naturally look for those in good locations with potential for long-term growth in value. If you purchase such a property, be prepared to keep it until the market increases. Holding on to properties in hopes of long-term gains has the potential to be risky if the bottom drops out of the market in the unforeseeable future. Some investors prefer to rent the property out or flip it as soon as possible.
Owning real property is often only the first step in real estate investment. You will need to make improvements and repairs, manage the renters, and be prepared to sell if the market mandates it if you want to maximize your profits.
Be sure to analyze all relevant factors when considering an investment in real estate. Do not allow your emotions to rule your choices. Instead, pay attention to crucial factors such as market trends, rental yields, and current market value of a property before moving ahead with your decision. You might not become the next Donald Trump, but careful planning and judicious investing should head you in the right direction.

A Closer Look At The Nursing Continuing Education Seminars ...

The nursing continuing education seminars are initiatives which are geared towards the improvement and maintenance of the aspects of clinical performances. The effort entails participating in the analysis of case studies, relevant educational programs at the university level, and cases on the specialty.

During the actual tutorials the courses are specified in order to ensure that the participants are able to associate with them. The lessons include specific courses for registered professionals. In addition to the lessons, the resources which can assist nurses in their experiences are also explored. Some of these resources include medical reference guides and books.

In order to be fully informed on matters relating to tutorials as regards the accreditation by state participants need to confirm the same before commencement of a colloquium. Consequently, where a participant feels that some crucial resources are left out they are allowed to suggest their inclusion. Request forms are usually submitted requesting such addition.

By suggesting the inclusion of resources it gives the learners a sense of belonging. This further helps to improve the program. Due to the increased quest for qualified personnel there is a corresponding increase in the need for a comprehensive continued training for professionals. This enables them to sharpen their knowledge and acquire new skills.

The internet provides a competent source of information with regard to these programs. It is therefore essential for concerned persons to get information from the relevant websites. William Lucas Walker: Spilled Milk: Photoshopping My Neck

It's 8:30. Baths are done, the kids' teeth have been brushed for the mandated seven seconds, and it's time for bed. Which for my 6-year-old, still means a story.

Only my son is tired of the old standbys. We've exhausted Hans Christian Anderson and I'm avoiding Pinocchio because James is at that stage where he's keeps drawing raucous comparisons between Pinocchio's telescoping nose and his own . . . let's just say for now we're skipping stories about wooden boys.

So tonight James is bored, like my agent, and demanding new material, like my agent.

"Daddy, make up a story!"

As anyone can tell you who has read Bruno Bettelheim's classic, The Uses of Enchantment (I haven't), the most timeless and enduring fairy tales evolve from deep inner human conflicts. Universal problems which, according to Bettelheim, ". . . seem incomprehensible and hence unsolvable." That's why they resonate.

This holds true as well for my made-up fairy tales. Which means that on this night, in honoring my son's request for a new story, I go with my most recent obsession.

"Once upon a time," I begin, "Daddy had a jawline."

James stares at me blankly.

"A jawline, James, so chiseled that it could slice through a thicket of thorny brambles. A jawline, my son, that in the 80s turned the heads of some of the most desirable princes on the island of Manhattan. A jawline, baby boy -- and I pause for effect -- Audrey Hepburn would have killed for."

"Audrey who?" drones James, his clueless eyes confirming what researchers have stated for years, that a child's sexual orientation is firmly set by the age of four.

I attempt launching into Audrey's extensive filmography, but James is having none of it.

"I don't like this story."

"Trust me, it's really, really good. The bad guy . . . is Time."

"I want this," he says, handing me a book. And for the fifth time this February, we begin Tow Mater Saves Christmas.

James doesn't give a damn about his dad's deep inner conflict, and why should he? He couldn't care less about the incomprehensible and hence unsolvable problem of my sagging flesh. But tonight he's the loser. James loves scary stories, and there is nothing more terrifying than a jawline being swallowed by a neck.

All this began about four years ago. Bodies and minds begin the ugly joke of betraying their owners sometime after 40. I'm a good bit past that. I began to suspect something more serious -- premature senility, to be exact -- the day it became clear that my neck had lost every memory of how it's supposed to look. Turtlenecks that once gave me a sleek, faux-hottie appearance at holiday parties have now become sad knit retaining walls struggling to hold back a mudslide of skin.

Technology used to make me feel young. Smartphones, iPads, I was always the first on my block. I felt so zippy and hip with my texting and apps. I was especially thrilled with the advent of Skype, which makes possible a magical feat: being able to see the people you need to call but would do just about anything to avoid being in the same room with. I was enjoying this delightful innovation one afternoon a few months ago with David, a college friend I've not seen in over a decade, when he casually remarked, "Hey, what is it they call that thing under your chin? Is that a wattle?" I no longer Skype.

Recently my 10-year-old daughter began playing with it. The wattle. Playing with it. Swinging Daddy's swooping neck back and forth like some hideous hammock of flesh. Elizabeth soon grew tired of this game and stated flatly, "Daddy, you need to get this thing grilled off." Grilled off? I have no idea what that means, but I agree completely.

My husband says no way. He's adamant on this subject; plastic surgery is a deal-breaker. Kelly belongs to that rare species you occasionally read about in obscure medical journals: the gay man without vanity. He says he has no problem with my thickening neck. Or waistline, he adds unnecessarily. Circle of life, he calls it. Easy to say when you're 12 years younger and your circle hasn't started to sag.

"You can't turn back time. Embrace the future," says the man who still uses the clock radio he got in junior high. I point out the irony.

"There's nothing wrong with my clock radio," he says. "It works great and so does your neck. You're not changing either one."

I point out that his clock radio still looks exactly the same as it did in 1982. If that were true of my neck, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

So I Photoshop it.

It's free, it's fast and I've become really good at it. In minutes I can adjust any unflattering photo, restoring my failing jawline to what it what it still looks like in my mind, one so chiseled it really could slice through a thicket of thorny brambles.

2012-02-22-NeckBeforecopy.jpg2012-02-22-NeckAftercopy.jpg

I recommend that you learn to do this. You'll feel a million times better the next time you see that photo of yourself that only last week you mistook for a stranger smuggling a blowfish under his chin.

Then you too can make up bedtime stories for your bored, straight child that end like this:

"And so, Time was vanquished, the handsome prince was restored his rightful jawline, and he and his neck lived happily ever after." In photos.

JobSearchJedi.com: 5 Out-of-Date Job-Search Tactics

?Is it still correct to use ?Dear Sir or Madam? in a cover letter?? a reader asked in an e-mail.

?That isn?t such a great idea,? I wrote back. ?No one uses ?Dear Sir or Madam? anymore, unless they?re actually writing to a madam, such as Heidi Fleiss.? I?m not sure my e-mail correspondent caught the joke.

It?s not that using out-of-date job-search approaches brands you as older. Rather, it?s that using no-longer-in-fashion job search techniques marks you as out of touch.

Employers pay us, in part, to be aware of trends and phenomena that affect the workplace. Working people (and job-seekers) should follow the news, keep a bead on our changing world, and stay abreast of changes in business, technology, politics, and cultural shifts. That isn?t an unreasonable expectation. If a job-seeker isn?t curious and perceptive enough to notice that the last time he saw ?Dear Sir or Madam? on a letter was around the time Chevy Chase impersonated Gerald Ford falling down the stairs, how will he notice what?s changing in his field?

Here are five formerly useful, now dangerous job-search approaches that hark back to an earlier age. Get them out of your job-search repertoire, pronto.

1. Dedicated R?sum? Paper and Envelopes.?Don?t use nubbly beige or pink or stone-grey r?sum? paper, or any other kind of special paper or matching envelopes, in your job search. Dedicated-use r?sum? paper is a 1980s artifact. Most of your r?sum?s will reach employers electronically, in which case the employer will print it out. For r?sum?s you print on your own, use plain white bond paper. (If you want to use a heavier stock than usual, do it.) Keep r?sum? formatting simple. You don?t need horizontal lines or curlicues, unless you are yourself a creative person, in which case you can go hog-wild with artistic expression. What matters in your r?sum? is its content. You won?t win any points with a r?sum? or cover letter on fancy paper that whispers, ?I have a stack of Christopher Cross cassettes in my car.?

2. Creaky Cover Letter Language.?When I read ?Dear Sir or Madam,? I instantly get a picture of a person wearing white gloves and carrying tiny mother-of-pearl opera glasses in her handbag. Don?t get me wrong?I have opera glasses and I wish white gloves were still in style. They?re not. Never use ?Dear Sir or Madam??or its cousin, ?To Whom It May Concern??in a cover letter for the same reason. In 2012, companies are porous. We can find our hiring manager?s name in two seconds using LinkedIn. We are obliged to try: Correspondence that begins ?To Whom It May Concern? means death to a job search. ?Dear Hiring Manager? is just as bad. Find the name of the relevant person or lob a r?sum? into the Black Hole and skip the cover letter altogether.

Facebook PS Vita app hits US PlayStation Store

Although the PlayStation Vita's official US launch brought with it the pleasures of LiveTweeting, WiFi-only Netflix access and Flickr's photo-based networking, its Facebook and Foursquare apps were curiously absent. Today that's partially changed, however, as Sony's announced that the service that Zuckerberg built is now available as a free 12MB download from the PlayStation Store (on the wall of its PlayStation Facebook profile no less). We've gained access to the social network without a hitch, so be sure to let us know how it goes on your side of the screen in the comments. Hopefully it's more pleasing than AR table soccer.

T-Mobile Asks FCC To Block Verizon Cable Deal ? CBS Dallas / Fort ...

NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - T-Mobile USA, which just had its acquisition by AT&T blocked by regulators, is urging the federal government to block another deal in the wireless world: Verizon?s planned purchase spectrum from cable companies for $3.9 billion.

In a filing late Tuesday, T-Mobile USA said the Federal Communications Commission should stop the deal between Verizon Wireless, Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., Bright House Networks and Cox Communications because it would place an ?excessive concentration? of wireless spectrum in Verizon?s hands.

Nine public interest groups also filed motions to block the deal on Tuesday, ahead of a filing deadline on Wednesday.

With more wireless spectrum, a phone company can raise download speeds and serve more data-hungry devices like smartphones and laptops with cellular broadband.

Verizon Wireless, the country?s No. 1 cell phone company, already has a relatively large amount of spectrum, while T-Mobile, the No. 4, does not.

T-Mobile?s petition to block the deal is the first by a major Verizon Wireless competitor. Two weeks ago, T-Mobile joined Sprint Nextel Corp., the No. 3 wireless carrier, and DirecTV Group Inc., the satellite TV company, in asking the FCC to make Verizon and the cable companies produce more information about the deal.

Last week, a New Jersey?s Division of Rate Counsel, a state agency that advocates for consumers, asked the FCC to block the deal, also citing the spectrum accumulation issue.

Verizon Wireless has defended the deal, saying it means unused spectrum will become available to wireless subscribers.

In early December, Verizon Wireless announced a deal to buy spectrum from Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks for $3.6 billion. The cable companies had bought the spectrum jointly at an FCC auction in 2006, with loose plans to start a wireless company or form a joint venture with one. Those plans never came to fruition.

The parties said they hoped to close the deal by the middle of this year. But opposition to it has been mounting, with T-Mobile?s petition to block it being the most salient move so far.

Verizon later struck a similar but separate deal to buy spectrum held by Cox for $315 million. Cox had started setting up its own wireless service, but gave up last year, saying it would be too small to compete against the big cellphone companies.

Under the deals, Verizon Wireless and the cable companies will be marketing each other?s services in their stores, even though Verizon Communications Inc., the New York-based majority owner of Verizon Wireless, competes with the cable companies in providing pay-TV and broadband service.

Shares of Verizon Communications slipped 10 cents to $38.39 in morning trading Wednesday.

Stevens Point Brewery Investing $1 Million into Expansion ...

New equipment will increase brewing capacity to keep up with demand

STEVENS POINT, WI - For the third time in three years, Stevens Point Brewery is expanding its production capacity to keep up with demand.

The latest expansion ? a $1.1 million project includes nine new fermentation tanks, two new bright beer tanks, a new 7,000-gallon hot water tank and a centrifuge for filtering finished beer. When all of the new equipment is up and running this spring, the brewery will be able to brew 120,000 barrels of beer annually, a 20% increase.

Since 2009 the Stevens Point Brewery has invested approximately $1.5 million in new equipment and additional storage space to increase capacity and improve efficiency, according to Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner.

?Last year we added 6,600 square feet of warehouse space, five aging tanks and three fermentation tanks to bring our brewing capacity up to 100,000 barrels per year,? Martino said. ?In 2010, we built a 2,700-square-foot addition to expand our keg cooler room and add four aging tanks.

?We have our loyal customers to thank for our continued success, and as our sales continue to grow, we?ll continue to expand our capacity to keep up with the demand,? Martino added. ?We?ve still got plenty of room to grow and we fully intend to do so.?

The two new bright beer tanks for package release beer will allow Point Brewmasters Gabe Hopkins and John Zappa and their team of Brewing Operators to brew six days per week instead of five. The 120-barrel tanks, which hold finished beer ready for the bottle and can lines, will be installed by the end of February.

The nine new fermentation tanks scheduled to be installed in late March are vertical fermentation ?unitanks? and represent a first for the Stevens Point Brewery, according to Hopkins. ?Our new vertical tanks are twice as tall as they are wide, and they?re called unitanks because they allow us to ferment and age beer all in one vessel,? he explained. ?Vertical tanks also enable improved dry hopping of our beer. Traditional fermenters are horizontal and can be used for either fermenting or aging, but not both in the same tank.?

The centrifuge, which will arrive in April, will help improve beer quality and production efficiencies. ?We will be able to filter beer faster and improve the quality of our product in the package,? Hopkins said.

The new hot water tank will be used to heat water at the beginning of the brewing process and will be the first piece of new equipment to be installed, in mid-February.

Why I'm Taking All of My Daughter's Toys Away | Unbinding the Wild ...

When I became a mother, I decided that there were a few things I would do differently than most moms I knew. Attachment parenting were one of them. Extended breastfeeding another. And then, of course, I wasn?t going to raise my child to be a consumerist, and I wasn?t going to flood her with plastic fantastic toys she wouldn?t care about. So I didn?t. But what I didn?t count on, was that I actually wouldn?t be raising her alone. She?d be part of a family, a community and a society over which I have very little control. This has become increasingly more obvious, and looking into her room the other day, I was shocked to see what I saw.

I?ve tried organizing the chaos, of course. Each of her toy categories have their own boxes, and everything that can be done has been done in order to keep it nice and tidy for her. She even claimed that she?d never make a mess again, after the last organizing frenzy we had, dancing freely in her room, beaming of happiness over the space that was given to her.

But this time? I had started to become haunted by a blog post I had written a year ago: Give the Kids Materials, Not Toys. (If you haven?t read it, go read it before you finish this blog post ? it will make so much more sense! icon smile Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away )

Was I walking my talk? Really?

No.

No, I wasn?t.

I was, in fact, allowing all my daughter?s STUFF to hurt her. And come to think of it, she wasn?t actually playing it either, the mess I saw when I opened the door to her room was actually there from the last time she had a friend over. And what?s more? they didn?t actually play with it after making a mess, as they ended up in the living room with us, painting side by side on some big card boards.

Light bulb moment.

?You know what??, I said to my beautiful daughter the other day. ?Mom?s gonna take all your toys away now, so that you?ll have more room for your hobby materials in your room ? and I?ll even get you some more of them. OK??

I was expecting a gasp and maybe even a disbelieving laughter. Or at least a terrified ?Nooooo!!!?.

?OK?, she said. Smilingly.

I was dumbfounded. OK, then..? Maybe she hadn?t fully grasped the consequences yet..?

But the next morning, out of the blue (it was in fact too early for me to remember this little project of mine), she said:

?Mom? When you take my toys away, can I keep Ekko? I love him. icon smile Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away ?

Ekko is her stuffed pet squirrel, made to be so natural looking as possible, and I know she truly loves him ? he?s even with her in kindergarten today. Of course I?d let her keep him. icon smile Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

But this, then, meant that she had actually taken the time to reflect on the possibility of having all her toys taken away from her ? and she was still perfectly OK with it, as long as she could keep Ekko. And we talked about this some more, and her only wish for her room was

Oh. OH! I really want some new play dough! icon biggrin Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

The excitement, the actual RELIEF in her voice..!

I spent all day up in her room yesterday, while she was in kindergarten, determined that I wouldn?t let her down. It felt scary and a bit sad at first, to be quite honest. Out went the baby doll I was playing with as a child, out went the crib my grandparents gave me one Christmas, and out went the? doll cloth diapers I made her.

But as I went on, it dawned on me? these were my issues, not hers. Up until now, I had imposed my stuff on her. I wasn?t a tad bit better than the rest of society, making her relate to my memories and ideas about recycling and reusing, too.

But now, I was setting my beautiful daughter free.

Free from all the ?shoulds?. Free from all the expectations of what she?d like to play with, free from all the ideas of who she should be ? free from all definitions that are not her own.

By the time I was done relieving her of all her stuff, I felt as purged as the room I was standing in.

Clear space.

Only for her, to create her art. To create herself, her life and her own definitions of what that should be.

On top of her bookshelf sat a bag of craft supplies we bought her on the last family holiday, and which she actually picked out herself (as it turned out, this is her dearest holiday memory ? never mind the lions we saw or the bear cubs, oh no, it could never outshine the wonderful fairytale of her in a hobby store!). In this bag there were also some art she?d created, and I took all this out now. Her supplies were neatly placed on her shelf, with her table just underneath. Her art was pinned to the wall above, for her to see and to remember.

I gave her a basket of yarn of different textures and colors ? she always borrows mine anyway, and besides, she?s getting big enough to have a go at stitching soon. And I gave her a box of cones, sticks and bark from the woods, as I know she?s always gathering this if she?s out walking.

?

Her room went from this:? IMAG0345 179x300 Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away??? To this: ? IMAG0348 179x300 Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

?

She absolutely loved it. No time for dinner, even, between kindergarten and dancing (I take her to a class for four-year olds, in creative dance and play). And on the way home, she asked me?

Mom? When I come home? May I please make some more art in my room before I go to bed? Pleeeeaaaase? icon biggrin Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

Of course you can, my love. Of course. icon smile Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

Today, we?re buying her some new play dough, too. One she picks out for herself. And when she does find out that she misses her toys eventually, I will know that she actually wants them, for her own sake. They are just downstairs in the basement, ready to move in again on her request.

But as for now? My little girl is perfectly happy with her new space. Not to mention the endless possibilities of creating her art. icon smile Why Im Taking All of My Daughters Toys Away

Video: Calls growing to arm Syrian rebels

>> secretary of state hillary clinton system ramping up diplomatic efforts to remove syrian president bashir assad from power amid growing calls including members of congress from the united states to arm the rebels. in ton eachia on friday, she will meet with representatives of 70 nations to respond to the uprise package. white house press secretary jay carney said the u.s. so far is looking for a diplomatic solution here.

>> we do not believe that adding to the militarization of syria is the right approach.

>> meanwhile, an american reporter and a french photojournalist were the killed today in more intense syrian government shelling in the city of homs . american marie colvin was working for britain's sunday times. her grieving mother just spoke with reporters at her home on new york's long island.

>> and passion and determination and lived her life that way.

>> nbc's news correspondent richard engel joins us live via skype along the border with turkey and syria . thank you so much for joining us here. you know the conversations happening within members of congress in the states about arming the rebels in syria . they are making a comparison to what we saw in libya to what's happening in syria . is that fair and accurate to do that?

>> it is a very different conflict. in libya , in many ways libya didn't matter. it's an oil- rich country with a tiny population, just 6 million people surrounded by desert practically on the mediterranean. and this is a country that has deep international ties. it is connected to iran. it is connected to hezbollah. there is an ethnic division within the country with a shiite minority ruling the country and a sunni majority trying to under seat the government. so a very different dynamic, much more complicated. there was a belief that a quick intervention in libya would betom the government and that a new regime would come in even libya , which is far more simple than syria , has proven to be difficult. the syrian opposition here like in libya is also quite mysterious. a lot of u.s. officials don't know exactly who they would be arming. there's not a clear leadership. there have been a lot of defectors. but who exactly the defectors are and where are the loyalties of this free syrian army also remains untested.

>> is au know, human rights organizations have said thousands of lives have been lost already in the past year. we're still hearing from the administration that diplomatic options are what they are exploring. from your experience and what you've been able to obtain in talking with some of the folks involved in these talks, what are the realistic options at this point, richard?

>> i think the united states would like to see a coup. they would like to having pressure on the syrian government and try and find a new group of leaders from within the system. from within the military. from within the political establishment. and not have the to go through a round of civil war . if you throw in weapons into this conflict, then effectively you'ring back and saying well, we'll let the stronger side win and let the two sides sort it out. the united states and i think many other parties would like to see some sort of transition. the problem is that hasn't happened so far. it's been going on this many conflict for nearly a year. and one side, the opposition, is being slaughtered. you talked about the situation in homs where those twos journalists marie colvin was killed and the people of homs almost 30 through surrounded and they are being shelled relentlessly and running out of food and basic supplies.

BU Literary Lions Take the Stage Tonight | BU Today | Boston ...

Among those participating in tonight?s faculty reading are (clockwise, from top left) Ha Jin (GRS?94), Chloe Martinez (GRS?06), Robert Pinsky, Molly Smith Metzler (GRS?02), Leslie Epstein, Rosanna Warren, and Sigrid Nunez. Photo of Molly Smith Metzler by Carolyn Fong. Photo of Sigrid Nunez by Marion Ettlinger

One of Boston?s premier literary events takes place tonight when BU?s Creative Writing Program hosts its annual Faculty Reading, where faculty and recent graduates of the program read from their poems, novels, and plays?some of which have never been shared publicly.

The six faculty members reading are Ha Jin (GRS?94), a College of Arts & Sciences professor of creative writing, who will read from his latest novel, Nanjing Requiem (Pantheon, 2011), poet Rosanna Warren, BU?s Emma Ann MacLachlan Metcalf Professor of the Humanities, novelist Sigrid Nunez, a CAS visiting lecturer, Robert Pinsky, a CAS professor of English and former three-time U.S. poet laureate, Leslie Epstein, Creative Writing Program director, and poet and critic Dan Chiasson, a CAS lecturer in creative writing, whose most recent book is Where?s the Moon, There?s the Moon: Poems (Knopf, 2011).

The evening will also feature readings from two recent program graduates, playwright Molly Smith Metzler (GRS?02) and poet Chloe Martinez (GRS?07). Metzler, whose play Close Up Space was produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club last year in a production starring Frasier?s David Hyde Pierce, says she plans to read from her new comedy, Elemeno Pea.

Metzler says she loves writing for the stage, primarily because it?s so hard to do. ?You get nothing?you get a blank stage and a blank page,? she says. ?Yet your job is to create a blueprint for something worthy of enormous collaboration, worthy of a director, and actors, and designers and an audience that is going to willingly sit in a dark room with strangers for 90 minutes. It?s a humbling and terrifying and thrilling and exceptional responsibility.?

Warren, who will read from her poem ?Glaucoma,? recently published in the New Yorker, says the poem ?came right out of autobiography: medical reality, a friend?s death, the impending loss of a property to which my partner and I have been very attached.? She also plans to read ?a zany political poem,? she says.

Epstein will read excerpts from his just published novel Liebestod: Opera Buffa with Leib Goldkorn (W. W. Norton, 2012). ?I have been reading different parts of this novel for the full five years it has taken to write this book,? Epstein notes. ?At last I can stop. Farewell, Leib, you sweetheart! You darling! Farewell!?

Dan Chiasson, poetry, The New Yorker, Boston University Creative Writing faculty

Dan Chiasson (left) has written four books and received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship and a Pushcart Prize. He is an associate professor of English at Wellesley College as well as teaching at BU and is the New Yorker poetry editor. BU Today recently spoke with him about what inspires him to write and the new poem he?ll read tonight.

BU Today: You were in your mid 20s when you started writing poetry seriously. What drew you to poetry?

Chiasson: I was drawn to reading poetry at an early age. I never studied an instrument for very long as a kid; a few flute lessons was as far as I got. But I think I had essentially a musician?s approach to language. Language was my instrument. It?s true that I stopped thinking of myself as a ?poet? after high school, but that was mainly because I was so immersed in the poetry of the past, I figured I could never match up. I mean, if you spend your days reading Milton, in one way that?s inspiring, but in lots of other ways it?s pretty humbling.

When you begin writing a poem, how do you approach it?

I write poetry so infrequently. I?m not the kind of person who has a writing desk with piles of drafts on it. I suppose I just work things over in my head until I?m ready to go. I usually write very rapidly once I?m in something. The long poem in my next book, called ?Bicentennial,? I wrote in an afternoon, standing up at the counter of an apartment we were renting in Paris. Occasionally an email would come in; I?d answer it and go back to writing the poem. It was, and is, an odd, mixed state of immersion and distraction when I?m writing.

Where do you find inspiration?

I?ve found inspiration in any number of things; I never know ahead of time what will work. The main thing is to develop habits and hobbies that remove the conscious mind from the burden of ?must write a poem; must be inspired.? So I write lots of essays, and correct my students? papers, and play with my kids, or talk with my wife, or fret over money, or watch a baseball game, or look at old YouTube clips of news broadcasts from my childhood?whatever. Something ends up being ?inspiring.?

Does your work as New Yorker poetry critic inform your poetry, and vice versa?

I don?t know many poets very well; my wife isn?t a poet; the vast majority of my friends are not poets or writers; my family wasn?t a highly literary family. So writing reviews and teaching (the two are a lot alike) are my way of explaining myself, explaining what matters to me on the inside, to readers whose interest in poetry I can?t take for granted. Writing poetry is very different. It feels more like secrecy than candor, more like privacy than congeniality. When I write a poem, I figure somebody somewhere might be able to explain it. When I write reviews or teach, I?m that somebody.

As a critic, what do you think makes for a good poem?

Honestly I have no idea. I like all kinds of poetry. I can only be very vague: poetry has to surprise without being gimmicky, it has to have an emotional core, and it has to have a playful, insouciant attitude towards language. Robert Frost called poetry ?play for mortal stakes.? I agree.

With all your other duties, how difficult is it to find time to write?

Free time is very bad for my writing. So I try to keep as busy as possible, and figure the poems will come. I write more poetry now, with kids and jobs and writing assignments with deadlines, than I did when I had all the time in the world to waste. I am a great waster of free time; there needs to be almost none for me to be happy. Reading is another matter; I often feel I don?t have enough time or mental sharpness to read what I need to read to keep my mind fueled.

What poet influenced you when you began writing poetry?

Too many to name. But Frank Bidart made a real difference to me personally; he has taught me the most of anyone in my life about poetry. Robert Pinsky read at Amherst when I was an undergraduate; I?ve never forgotten it, and I think his ?music? is probably the music I?ve learned the most from, found most useful. At Harvard, it was Jamaica Kincaid, my dear friend and our older son?s godmother, who most inspired me to be a writer: her uncompromising idea that writers tell the truth, plain and simple, along with her wild mind and sense of humor. Louise Gl?ck has been an incredible friend and a constant source, in her work, of surprise and invention and just pure human intelligence.

What will you read tonight?

I?m going to read, very rapidly because we don?t have a lot of time, the title poem from my next book, Bicentennial. It?s about my earliest memories of the Bicentennial parade in Battery Park, Burlington, Vt. I was five. I think it?s cool that my earliest memories?there are none earlier?were of that day and celebration. There was a band concert with veterans in uniform. There were hippies. All these names for what I was seeing, of course, came later; all I have is inchoate impressions. The poem is about my childhood and the sensation of getting one little sliver of history that?s yours to glimpse, before it?s other children?s turns to glimpse their little sliver, and on and on. It has a Ferris wheel in it. I think almost constantly about Ferris wheels and other amusement rides these days.
